September, 2005 — This photo shows how the posts are attached to the concrete footings using Simpson steel post bases. Technically these brackets are only designed to secure weight-bearing posts. However, they will work fine for fence posts in our mild California weather conditions (not suitable for standing up to hurricane strength winds!).
In between the posts I laid a row of cobblestone-style rocks in concrete, creating a low barrier to contain the pathway gravel.
